The term Moorish generally refers to people from North Africa who were of Islamic faith and ruled Spain from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries. The term "Moor" is a historical nickname for people of North African descent.
The Moors played a significant role in shaping the culture and history of Spain. During their rule, they brought with them advanced knowledge in mathematics, astronomy, science, medicine, literature and philosophy, which had a major influence on Western Europe.
Their architecture and art also left a lasting impact on the region, as evidenced by the Alhambra palace in Granada and the Mezquita mosque in Cordoba.
Despite their contributions to society, the Moors were subject to discrimination and persecution throughout their time in Spain. The Reconquista, a period of Christian expansion that lasted several centuries, eventually led to the expulsion of the Moors in 1492.
Today, the term Moorish is often used in reference to the Islamic and Arabic cultural elements in Spain, particularly in its architecture, music and cuisine.
